The Creation of Excalibur

Hyde Greene

Hyde Greene (he/it) is a writer, illustrator, and performance artist from throughout New York state. A storyteller at heart, he draws on both lived experiences and hypothetical ones to write anything from comedy to horror, poetry to prose. It is fascinated by the macabre, which bleeds into every tale he tells.

Clink goes the sword of Damocles
As she taps stone bricks between our feet
And divides relations
With creations of Excalibur.

‘Must be clairvoyant or divine’
The gesture to fall ‘side
‘Lucky we are to have made such space
Lest the blade destroy us both!’

His laugh full of conviction,
A panting jurisdiction,
He glares at his woe
Who stares in yearning for Excalibur.

Her long, gold branches blanket grout
Hopeful twitching hands reach out—
Pommel, she bade guard and grip,
Seeking the blade that almost destroyed them both…

‘Reconsider pain, though you hold no heart of mine’
He speaks upon her fallen ears, shiny metal rinds
‘We escaped unscathed by mere sheer indifference,
So why must you slay me with Excalibur?’
