A Hopeless Rhyme

Ariana Rao
My name is Ariana Rao and I am currently in college double majoring in English Literature and Creative Writing. I’m from Staten Island, New York and have always loved reading and writing. I predominantly write poetry and have been consistently writing it for 8 years now. Poetry is my love and passion and I am so grateful to connect with others through this beautiful art form.
I was once a lowly maiden
With feathers in my hair
I traded my luck for a crown
I danced a duel with despair.
Now my kingdom built of dust and air
Quivers at the roar
Of a beast, daunted by its glare.
Oh mighty pillars of my heart
Restless Kings, bleeding art,
Foreign wisdom seeps within
The cracking stones caving in.
I am no such Queen by name
I am frightened of words
I am ridden by shame,
But in the desperate whispers of night
My lithe soul comes alight
For knights of wonder, knights of glass
Break through my hazy trance.
Queen no more will I be
Oh knights you have come to conquer me.
I will now dance with the kin of despair,
Fair death will lay me bare.
Fair death will tear and tear
And I who shunned the courage of luck
Is struck, by the faces of time
Who have come to steal my hopeless rhyme;
My kingdom, my world, all that is no longer mine.
